Intake Activities

Class of Younger Children (24 -30 months):

With youngest children, this opening time is best spent in a number of Just for Fun Activity Centers. These simple activities often have very little, specifically Christian content. They are only high interest activities that provide a way to settle children happily into their class as you welcome them and talk with them a bit. These activities are important because they can help develop skills as well as provide opportunities for children to learn how to share and cooperate, as Christ would have them. Pray that the Lord will use these activities to give you greater insight into your children and to be fruitful opportunities to learn about loving God and loving others. Also pray that God use the free time portion of your session to make you aware of important things to bring out during your time with the children. There may be worries or joys or questions that might be important for you to weave into your time together, helping the children better understand who God is and encourage them to delight in Him and draw close to Him.

Choosing Activities

Choose a number of activities to have out for children to play with, but preferably not all of them so that you can vary what the children do each week during this time. Try to choose different types of activities so that children with varying likes and abilities will find something they want to do. There are many wonderful activities to do. In Appendix E in the Teach, Take & Tell Books, there is a listing of specific activities and products to consider. There is also of a couple of websites listed where you may find them.

Music

Music adds a welcome feel to any room. This opening time is a good opportunity to have some of the music the children will be learning, quietly playing in the background. You may choose to play the Unit Music CD that includes songs the children will be singing.

Appendix E in the teacher's binder includes other music recommendations

Books

Have a book center for the children to listen to stories or just look at pictures. Books are a wonderful way to get into a good conversation with the children. Again, try not to have all your books out at the same time. Put out only a few each week and rotate them. Appendix E includes a listing of good books for the children to look at. Appendix D lists specific stories from these books that tie in with each unit.

Class of Older Children (31-48 months)

For older children, we have suggested using a Bible story or Scripture Verse review game as the Intake Activity during this time. A different pair of games is suggested for each week. Directions for these games are included in the unit resources.
